I was once told about a young man who worked as a dishwasher in a restaurant and for every plate or pan, he cleaned, he did his best. The owners noticed his hard work and diligence. When they asked the young man why he put such diligent work into cleaning the dishes, he replied, “I work for the audience of One.”
Time is one of the most precious things that we have in this life. What are you doing with your time? Every day, we have many choices to make and many of the choices we make are related to how we are spending our time. Are we spending our time on things that have eternal value or things that are temporary?
Maybe, the first thing that comes to mind when you think about spending time on things that last eternally is being on your knees in prayer, reading your Bible, or singing worship songs. These are not the only ways for us to focus our minds and spend our time on things that have eternal value. When we go to our workplace, be it a job in the office, a store, or a business environment, we have the choice on how to spend our time. I asked my husband the other day, “Honey, how is your work going? “Are you meeting your goals?” He replied, “I don’t have a measuring math on how I am doing or a specific career goal, but I am trying to do my work with integrity and glorify God” “Yes!!” I thought. That’s it! So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31).
We don’t all have to leave our countries and jobs to become full-time evangelists or missionaries—yes, they are doing tremendous work for the Kingdom of Christ—let’s glorify God in those seemingly little tasks assigned to us.
There is so much to learn from the dishwasher as to his humble heart and devotion to the Lord in all that he does. This is someone that I, as a mom, can learn from. Sometimes, the seemingly purposeless daily tasks of house cleaning or changing diapers can suddenly become valuable if we do them to serve the audience of one, knowing that He is worth our best.
Lord, help me to serve you in all I do, be it in going to my workplace, taking care of my children, and managing my household chores. Help me to keep in mind that you are my audience, that you are watching me every move at all times, and that my heart’s attitude towards you matters a lot. Nothing is too little in your eyes if it is done from love and devotion towards you. I praise your name. Amen.
